Simpler Mic Audio Path

How I Used To Do It

  1. Condenser Mic
  2. XLR-XLR Cable
  3. Mixer with Phantom Power
    1. Input gain setting
    2. Compression setting (usually 0)
    3. 3-band EQ (usually flat)
    4. FX Send knob (half-way)
  4. FX out 1/4” “Left” plug
  5. 1/8” stereo “Left” connection
  6. FTdx3000 “Line” jack (3-cond mini handles line in & out)

How I Do It Now

  1. Condenser Mic
  2. XLR-XLR Cable
  3. Phantom Power Adapter
  4. XLR-DIN8 Cable
  5. Mic jack on front of FTdx3000

When I cut and stripped one end of an XLR cable, inside I found a shield, a red, and a blue.

Shield soldered to pin 5, blue soldered to pin 7, and red soldered to pin 8.

You can see that the phantom supply runs on 12VDC, and the FTdx3000 has an RCA on the back with 13.8VDC output. I’ll make one more cable that goes between those two, but probably well shielded & a torroid at the phantom end to keep stray RF out.

This should then be very handy to take off-site, like a camper, or to operate from the back yard shed if I’m so inclined, without having to suffer the woes of the original hand mic.
