Why You See Small Companies With No SSL On Their Website

Scary Email From Bluehost

Email from Bluehost telling me that my hosting provider must create the CSR. I'm supposed to contact my hosting provider. Thing is, bluehost IS MY HOSTING PROVIDER, and this email came FROM BLUEHOST to me.

Uh, Bluehost IS my hosting provider. Yet, Bluehost is who sent me the email. So who the fuck am I supposed to contact? Who creates the CSR?

Well anyway, I log into Bluehost to see if I can follow the instructions.

Screenshot from Bluehost email. The instructions include a step wherein I have highlighted the phrase "click the ellipsis".

Notice these instructions in step 3 say there’s something labeled “Actions” (I never saw it) and that I should “click the ellipsis”. Want to see that page they’re talking about after clicking Security? Here it comes…

Yeah. Nothing says “Actions”. No ellipsis anywhere.

But if I click the SSL Certificate tab, then check the details, the renewed certificate is already done. It was issued yesterday (Apr 22, 2025) and expires in March of 2026.

So why do so many small companies have websites where the SSL Cert is expired? Because they get emails like this, for which the instructions do not match reality, and it turns out there’s nothing for them to even fucking do, and the “cry wolf” thing sets in, and they ignore all the bullshit emails from their hosting provider until suddenly there’s one that looks like all the others for which they actually do need to do some shit.

Bluehost is cheap. And easy to get started. That’s why I have this site hosted here. But they are no fucking good at providing accurate instructions, and they send scary emails when actually there’s nothing for me to do. This sort of shit is why IT folk gain a reputation for being dicks. Because all too often, they ARE.
